The pre-teen and teen years are some of the toughest years of our lives. That was true a generation ago and things are much harder nowadays. Kids are growing up faster than ever. And the culture is constantly bombarding them with messages that steer them away from Christian beliefs and values.
That’s why a church’s youth program is so critical.
Our goal with Vineyard Teens (6th thru 12th grade) is to help kids move beyond being Christians by default (because they were born in a Christian home) to owning their faith and living it out in a way that makes an impact in middle school and high school. And in the process, we aim to prepare them to thrive spiritually in their college years.
Christina and Tom Petz are leading a small group that meets the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, right during the church service. It is designed to help our teens become biblically grounded to help them navigate the challenges that pre-teens and teens face in this day and age.
What We’re Studying:
In our June 25th session, we continued our in-depth look at the creation account and answered some questions the kids had about some of the some of the more confusing parts of it. In the end, we showed how some of the language used is confusing because we don’t understand ancient beliefs in the area of science. For example, ancient people believed that the sky was made out of water, which is why Genesis talks about God creating a vault of water in the sky as part of creating the world. But, once we talked about a couple of examples, what Genesis is actually saying became a lot clearer!
We are on “summer break” from now until August 27th. Stay tuned, though, for an announcement on an upcoming opportunity for the teens to get together for a day of fun sometime in July.
